College squirrels gone wild? Using Sciurus carolinensis behavior to assess the ecosystem value of urban green spaces

چکیده

Predicted rapid increases in urbanization the face of accelerating biodiversity loss underscores need for urban development that promotes, rather than displaces, native plants and animals. One approach increasing is through “green infrastructure”. Although research has explored urban-rural gradients overall value green infrastructure, few studies have investigated habitat wildlife different types greenspace. Here, we use a well-established metric ecology, giving up-densities (GUDs), to compare foraging costs common species, eastern gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis), among three infrastructure categories: municipal parks, college campuses, residential yards. We found GUDs squirrels did not differ significantly location categories after controlling proximity roads, but roads was associated with higher all locations. In an explicit test, also both traffic volume were GUDs. maximum distance from campuses parks yards, indicating greater proportion area “away roads” compared Our results indicate vehicle may contribute “urban landscape fear” suggest campus park configurations reduce road effects could improve quality possibly other

Detection of squirrel poxvirus by nested and real-time PCR from red (Sciurus vulgaris) and grey (Sciurus carolinensis) squirrels

BACKGROUND Squirrel poxvirus (SQPV) is highly pathogenic to red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris), and is a significant contributing factor to the local extinction of the species in most parts of England and Wales, where infection is endemic in Eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) populations. Although a nested PCR assay has been used successfully to study the epidemiology of SQPV, samples h...

An epizootic of fibromatosis in gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) in Florida.

Beginning in the fall of 1998 and extending into the spring and early summer of 1999 there was a large epizootic of squirrel fibromatosis in squirrels in seven counties in peninsular Florida. Hundreds of gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) with multiple cutaneous tumors were submitted or reported to biologists, veterinary hospitals, and private wildlife rehabilitators. Most squirrels died or ...

Progesterone concentrations in peripheral plasma of non-pregnant and pregnant grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis).

Plasma concentrations of progesterone in non-pregnant female grey squirrels were never greater than 3.2 nmol/l and no significant differences were found between levels in anoestrous, pro-oestrous and oestrous animals. During pregnancy, plasma concentrations of progesterone increased significantly and reached a maximum level of 318 nmol/l at around day 35 of the 44 day period of gestation. After...

Cutaneous and systemic poxviral disease in red (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and gray (Sciurus carolinensis) squirrels.

From September 2005 through October 2006, fibromatosis was diagnosed in 2 red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) and 1 gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). All 3 squirrels had multifocal to coalescing, tan, firm alopecic cutaneous nodules. Two squirrels also had pulmonary nodules. Histologically, the cutaneous nodules had marked epidermal hyperplasia, with ballooning degeneration of keratinoc...
